{CodeDenver 2023}
A Technology Odyssey
{CODEDenver} Class of 2023
The 2023 {CodeDenver} cohort marked a triumphant debut, powered by partnerships with Metropolitan State University (MSU), Colorado School of Mines, and Full Sail University.
Over four weeks, 22 local students from grades 7 to 10 delved into science, technology, engineering, and math, exploring Denver's vibrant tech landscape.
The program was hosted at MSU's downtown engineering campus, adjacent to the Denver Nuggets arena, and catered to underrepresented groups in STEM.
Students toured diverse cutting-edge technologies, including a visit to Liberty Gas and Oil, where they gained insights into geology, petrochemical engineering, and industry equipment.
A Hands-On Journey for Tomorrow's Innovators
At Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU), sAt Metropolitan State University, students dove into the world of aerodynamics with a thrilling paper plane contest, explored the possibilities of 3D printing, and collaborated to build a bridge designed to withstand significant weight. To top it all off, they enjoyed a spirited water fight on the engineering building lawn—combining learning with a lot of fun.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Explored Climate Science: Students delved into the science behind global warming, examining atmospheric measurements for carbon and pollutants. They got an up-close look at an 800,000-year-old ice core from Antarctica, providing insights into Earth’s ancient atmosphere.
The visit also covered space weather and the effects of solar flares on Earth's electrical fields.
Unearthing Knowledge Through Exploring Geophysics and Coding
Experienced College Life and STEM Learning:
Over four nights, students stayed in dorms at the Colorado School of Mines, giving them a firsthand college life experience. They toured the historic Edgar Mine, where they delved into industrial engineering and geology.
The visit also included sessions on programming geophysical principles and exploring petrochemical concepts essential to the Denver area, providing a comprehensive understanding of the region's industrial landscape.
Exploring Water Treatment Processes
At the Denver Water Reclamation Facility, students were given a comprehensive tour, gaining insights into the complex processes of water sourcing, recycling, and purification.
The experience, though smelly, was highly educational, as they observed straining, percolation, and decontamination methods in action.
Dental Science Immersion
Students had the unique opportunity to step into the shoes of dentists at Safari Smiles. They learned how to fill teeth, explored the science behind X-rays, and gained a deeper understanding of dental care. As a memorable keepsake, each student took home a bejeweled tooth they worked on during their visit.
