{CodeDenver 2022}
A Technology Odyssey
Welcome to {CodeDenver}
The inaugural 2022 {CodeDenver} cohort marked a triumphant debut, powered by partnerships with Metropolitan State University (MSU) and Colorado School of Mines.
Over four weeks, 22 local students from grades 7 to 10 delved into science, technology, engineering, and math, exploring Denver's vibrant tech landscape.
The program was hosted at MSU's downtown engineering campus, adjacent to the Denver Nuggets arena, and catered to underrepresented groups in STEM.
Students toured diverse cutting-edge technologies, including a visit to Liberty Gas and Oil, where they gained insights into geology, petrochemical engineering, and industry equipment.
Unearthing Knowledge Through Exploring Geophysics and Coding
At Colorado School of Mines, students delved into the world of petroleum engineering, exploring geophysics and gaining firsthand experience in the field. They embarked on enlightening tours, including visits to the geology museum, home to some of Colorado's rarest stones and minerals.
Their journey continued with an afternoon dedicated to coding, enhancing their technological skills. The experience reached its pinnacle with a captivating trip to the Edgar Mine, a historic gold and mineral mine nestled in the Rockies' foothills, now serving as an educational hub for aspiring engineers.
A Hands-On Journey for Tomorrow's Innovators
At Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU), students collaborated with the engineering department, diving into hands-on activities. They honed their skills by soldering their own flashlights, delved into programming by mastering Sphero robots, and engaged in exhilarating races through the halls of the engineering building.
In an introduction to industrial engineering, they put their creativity to the test, constructing bridges and concocting robust slime substances capable of supporting their weight. Additionally, they delved into manufacturing processes, engaging in a spirited competition to design a precision manufacturing line to launch ping pong balls onto a target.
Exploring Space Tech and Aviation Innovation
The {CodeDenver} students embarked on an eye-opening journey to Lockheed Martin, where they delved into the forefront of space exploration and satellite technology. They discovered firsthand how technology propels commercial flying forward at the Denver airport.
Students explored emergency equipment, control rooms, and operations while venturing behind the scenes. On the tarmac, they were treated to the exhilarating sights and sounds of takeoffs and landings, experiencing the aviation industry up close.
Celebrating Achievements, Inspiring Futures
The program reached its pinnacle with a visit to the Denver Nuggets arena, where students showcased the outcomes of their projects and shared insights from their visits with families, community members, and educators. In a heartwarming gesture, Aaron Gordon presented each student with a $1000 scholarship aimed at supporting their journey towards post-secondary education.
The students are staying connected to one another and many of them will be participating in upcoming holiday events and the upcoming Gordon Family Giving Foundation night at the Nuggets January 15th game against the Orlando Magic.
These students had the opportunity to experience many different aspects of technology right in their own community. It helps them understand how vast the fields of STEM can be, and how much it powers their life, education and world around them. It inspires them to consider and prepare for STEM fields as they complete high school.
We are looking forward to 2023 with MSU and Colorado School of Mines in partnership with us again!
